Abandoned Navy Building

Got a tip from a Flickr friend on a great abandoned Navy building in a less traveled area of Alameda. Little spooky even when it was light out. Will have to take someone back for night shots or trying to bust in for some inside shots.

  1. I was stationed in Alameda - while i like your photo color and composition - the image makes me sad as this was a great Naval Air Station filled with history... Admiral Nimitz had a close call here...

  4. Cool photos! Does look haunted and reminds me that my family and I will be visiting Eastern State Penitentiary in the near future and from the photos I've seen of that, it too is very creepy looking.

The color effect on these shots is really, really neat.

Do take a buddy with you for your next photo shoot!

  5. I smell a Good Times outing in the making! These are great -- did you use HDR?

  7. Robert, much of the Alameda base is in decline and we have waited a very long time for them to decide what to do with this area. It is very sad about the base which really crushed the entire city of Alameda when it closed years ago. There are a couple of cool businesses like a gym, a vodka distillery, and some audio/video companies (much of matrix 3 was filmed on the base) but they need a plan to restore this beautiful piece of land to glory. One of the unfortunate side effects of it being a base was that there is a large amount of toxic materials still in the ground of the area. Makes it hard for development so it just continues to rot.

  8. I know what you mean. I wasn't the last one there, but close to it... I lived in Coast Guard Housing and thoroughly enjoyed my time in Alameda. I remember it fondly and would like to come back to visit the Bay area. Be careful on your night shoot.

  10. Hey Aves,
This is a HDR image. I set the autobracket function to EV -2,0,+2 and take 3 shots quickly to avoid blur (using a tripod is better but i don't usually lug it with me).

I then put those 3 RAW images into a software called Photomatrix that combines them into a single image with all the highlights, midtones, and shadows present. There is some tweaking in that software to control white balance, as well as light blending, and saturation.

I turn that into a jpeg and play with a bit further in Photoshop as well as add texture overlays. I am addicted to textures right now.

Sounds difficult but I have no formal lessons and am not the quickest learner and I am starting to get it. Just a matter of practicing and playing around.
